The 7 Canons Bonus

On April 28, 1923, the American Society of Newspaper Editors adopted a set of ethical rules called the Canons of Journalism. Journalists all over the world adopt the canons. The are seven different canons; 1) responsibility, 2) freedom of press, 3) independence, 4) sincerity, truthfulness, and accuracy, 5) impartiality 6) fair play, and 7) decency. Each canon has a specific reason on why it was passed. Each canon will be described and explained with examples below in the following paragraphs.
The first canon is responsibility. The definition of responsibility under the code of ethics is “The right of a newspaper to attract and hold readers is restricted by nothing but considerations of public welfare. The use a newspaper makes of the share of public attention it gains serves to determine its sense of responsibility, which it shares with every member of its staff. A journalist who uses his power for any selfish or otherwise unworthy purpose is faithless to a high trust.” This means that the newspaper needs to have responsibility for what it writes and what goes out in its paper. The writers also have to have the ethical standards of writing and take responsibility for being a great journalist, not become a flaky one.
The second canon is freedom of the press. The definition of freedom of the press under the code of ethics is; “Freedom of the press is to be guarded as a vital right of mankind. It is the unquestionable right to discuss whatever is not explicitly forbidden by law, including the wisdom of any restrictive statute. This ethical code is more for the editors of the newspaper or whoever is in charge of the news going out. Those people in charge are ethically bound to provide the truth and let everyone speak. Let every person have their voice heard in articles. They cannot just throw something out because they do not agree with it. They are supposed to let everything that is news get published.
The third canon is independence. The definition of independence under the code of ethics is freedom from all obligations except that of fidelity to the public interest is vital.” Independence is broken down into two parts; the first part is “Promotion of any private interest contrary to the general welfare, for whatever reason, is not compatible with honest journalism. So-called news communications from private sources not be published without public notice of their source or else substantiationn of their claims to value as news, both in from and substance.” The second part is partisanship. “Partisanship in editorial comment which knowingly departs from the truth, does violence to the best spirit of American journalism, in the news column it is subversive of a fundamental principle of the profession.” This is saying that the newspaper or journalist needs to be coming from its own source. It does not need to have someone behind it pulling the strings on what happens. If its independent the more likely no bias news articles get out, making it a better paper for the public.
The fourth canon of journalism is sincerity, truthfulness, and accuracy all rolled into one. The definition according to the code of ethic is,” Good faith with the reader is the foundation of all journalism worthy of the name. 1. By every consideration of good faith a newspaper is constrained to be truthful. It is not to be excused for lack of thoroughness or accuracy within its control, or failure to obtain command of the essential qualities. 2. Headlines should be fully warranted by the contents of the articles which they surmount.” In other words a paper needs to do its best to make sure everything it prints is actually what has happened. Especially if it isn’t true they need to be able to back up their claims and try to prove why they thought it was true. A nightly news anchor got into serious trouble for this because he supposedly ran a story without checking all the facts and the story turned out to be false. He lost people’s trust and it eventually got him fired.
The fifth canon of journalism is impartiality. According to the code of ethics the definition of impartiality is “Sound practice makes clear distinction between news reports and expressions of opinion. News reports should be free from opinion or bias of any kind. This rules does not apply to so called special articles unmistakably devoted to advocacy or characterized by a signature authorizing the writer’s own conclusions and interpretations.”  All this canon is saying is that everything written unless it is an editorial should just be focused on the news and not anything else. It should not focus on a certain side, a certain person, leaving multiple people out. The whole story needs to be written without any parts left out swaying the article in certain ways.
The sixth canon of journalism is fair play. The definition of fair play according to the code of ethics is “ a newspaper should not publish unofficial charges affecting reputation or moral character without opportunity given to the accused to be heard. 1) A newspaper should not invade the private rights or feelings without sure warrant of public right as distinguished from public curiosity. 2) It is the privilege, as it is the duty, of a newspaper to make prompt and complete correction of its own serious mistakes of fact or opinion, whatever their origin.” Again this is like the fourth canon. The news anchor that got in trouble also broke this canon. He may have not meant to but he did not check what he should have.
The seventh and final canon is decency. The definition of decency according to the code of ethics is, “A newspaper cannot escape conviction of insincerity if, while professing high moral purpose, it supplies incentives to base conduct, such as are to be found in details of crime and vice, publication of which is not demonstrably for the general good. Lacking authority to enforce its canons, the journalism here represented can but express the hope that deliberate pandering to vicious instincts will encounter effective public disapproval or yield to the influence of a preponderant professional condemnation.” The paper has to make sure what it writes is decent. It cannot write about bad things that can scare people. This cannon today is not widely followed.
These canons were placed into effect a long time ago. So naturally the interpretations of these ethical standards get revised. There are many newspapers and other media sources that do not follow the seven canons. They pry into people’s lives, they do not supply the full truth in an article, and they try to sway the publics opinion. The canons have evolved and in some instances have become obsolete but other media outlets do still try to follow them. They were placed into effect because they were to regulate how journalist writes. It definitely has helped how journalism itself has evolved. Journalists do all they can to get a good name for themselves because that is how they get promotions or get known by the public in most cases. If I become a journalists I will try to follows the seven canons as close as possible and be a good journalists.

Reading

I love reading! I have always loved to read. Elementary school I was reading book after book and reading up to a jr high level. In middle school I was already reading at a high school level. I really think that reading has helped everything about who I am. I am a constant thinker, I attribute reading to how smart I am, and I love to dream. Reading has helped all these thing. Ever since I have come to college I really have not had time to just sit down and enjoy books like I used to. There are so many things going on and I am so busy that I do not have the time to enjoy one. I'm ready for a break life is just so hectic right now. I just want to sit down and read a really good book. I have soo many on the list.

LSAT Prep Course

Well I start my LSAT Prep class tomorrow night. Professor Gooch is going to be teaching it and hopefully there will be a few people taking the class. I am extremely worried because it’s going to be tough and now I’m taking some more hours out of my day to take the class. It’s going to cost about 150 bucks and it’s really cheap actually. I want to do good so I’m definitely going to try. We start the first class with a full LSAT practice test it is going to take four hours. It’s extremely time consuming and difficult. Like I said I am extremely nervous.

R.I.P. Dennis Lowe

Mr. Lowe was an elder and deacon at the church I used to attend. Literally as I write this I got word that he passed away not even a half hour ago. Dennis was always good to me, he treated me well and my family well. He treated everyone like they were his family. Sometimes I think he treated me like one of his own grandsons. It is a sad day today. I have not attended church at London in a while just because I started going to different church in town. Dennis owned a Auto Parts store in Russellville and that is the last place I saw him. I went in there to ask him about getting a new radiator for my vehicle and he told me everything I needed. He didn’t look bad then but I knew he was sick, he had been for a while. I love you Mr. Lowe you were a great man. You are with God now and definitely not in pain any longer.

Spring Break

Well Spring Break 2011 is right around the corner, only three weeks away before countless college students and other young adults go towards the slopes of the Mountains or the beaches. Many of my friends will be making the pilgrimage to Panama City Beach and Destin Florida. They will party all week, drink gallons and gallons of alcohol, some of them will probably get a STD or two. Those kind of parties are not my thing. I have never had a real desire to go down there and party like that. It’s a waste of money and in all reality people can get pretty messed up. Things happen down there that really effect people’s lives in the long run.

Bob Dylan

I am listening to some Bob Dylan as I write this right now. I grew up on Bob Dylan and have listened to him my whole life. My dad grew up around the time he started singing and changing all these different things in music. I believe he is one of the greatest muscisians and songwriters ever even though he cannot really sing that well. I would really like to see him in concert but I fear it’s too late to see the true Dylan. His Grammy performance was an example of how is voice has kind of gone to pieces. It’s extremely raspy, a lot more than what it has always been. I encourage all to listen to him, he is a great influential person in history.

Losing

I hate losing. I have never really considered myself one of those people that are big competitors and just get all ticked off if they lose. I never think I am one of those people until I realize after I play that I really am one of those people. I played intramural volleyball tonight and we got steamrolled. I was not really happy about it, more because I played like crap and didn’t give the best I could have. I know I am better than how I actually played. Well we have multiple games and hopefully we can win one of them. I just want to play better.

NASCAR

It is that time of year again, the start of NASCAR season. A lot of people give me crap about being a fan of NASCAR but I do not know why I am fan but I just am. I grew up around it but my parents never really watched it so they did not get me started. I just picked up on it and have watched it since I was little. I have been to three NASCAR races, it helps that my brother lives literally less than five miles from the Daytona International Speedway. My favorite driver is Mark Martin mostly because he is from Arkansas. He is one of the best drivers out there though. He is kind of the Dan Marino or Karl Malone of NASCAR, one of the best never to win a championship. He has started the season off strong, finishing 10th in the Daytona 500 and 13th in today’s race in Arizona. Hopefully this year will be his year to win the championship but only time will tell.

Albert Pujols

What were the St. Louis Cardinals thinking when they did not sign Albert Pujols to the contract that he wanted. I understand he wanted a lot of money and some may think that is excessive but he is their franchise. They base their whole organization around their first basemen. He is an annual all-star and is the Cardinals offense, bombing home runs out of countless stadiums. Give him the money and keep him as long as he wants to be there. If things end up at the end of the season and they can’t resign him, fans in Missouri are going to be outraged. Their idol is gone and who knows it could start a new “curse of the bambino.”

Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament

If everything works out, this upcoming weekend I’m road tripping with some friends and we are going to Southaven, Miss to the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. The basketball teams have to win, Thursday and Friday before we will be able to get down to see them play. The semifinals are Saturday and the Championships are Sunday. It would be an awesome adventure with friends and other Tech fans. We have become the faces of the Arkansas Tech Basketball Student Section and we want to represent as much as we can. I know the players and coaches appreciate us being there supporting them and I can’t wait to be a part of something great like a championship tournament. If the girls win the tournament then they will most likely host the South Regionals and again the student section will be here cheering them on.

Arkansas Tech Basketball

Thursday and Saturday night I took part in what could arguably be my most memorable time at Arkansas Tech. Thursday night a group of friends and I went to Harding University in Searcy, Ark to watch Tech play Harding in a classic basketball rivalry. The Tech basketball teams did not disappoint, the Golden Suns easily beat the Harding girl’s team. Our makeshift student section cheered as loud as we could, there were only about ten of us. When the boy’s game started we got out numbered in the student section department. It seemed that whole Harding student body had to appeared to take part in cheering on their boys to a win. Many times we were drowned out by the loud roar of Harding fans. It turned out to be one heck of a classic going into overtime and Arkansas Tech barely pulling off the win. Saturday night the next game the teams had was just as exciting. Tech was playing Ouachita Baptist and again it was just as exciting as the boys game at Harding. The girls ended up winning in double overtime 100-97 and after the game they cut down the net since they had just won the conference. The coach looked up to the student section and motioned for us to go down on the court and celebrate with them. It was an exciting moment. I will never forget those games and those moments.

Disc Golf

It is almost spring season and the best part about spring, besides the sun and temperature change, it is the start of disc golf tournament season. The first tournament I’m going to participate in is March 12. It’s a three-man scramble tournament in memory of Matthew Roberts, a kid who died playing disc golf. After that tournament I plan to participate in at least one tournament a month maybe even more. I definitely will be competing in the recreation division because I’m not good enough to play in harder divisions. Disc golf is just extremely relaxing for me and I really like to play it all the time. It’s going to be interesting playing in tournaments, who knows I might one day become really good and win a few tournaments.

Lacrosse

In the last week one of my residents bought a lacrosse stick and has started to play with it around the building. Well I got interested and decided to start playing around with the stick. He started teaching me how to handle the stick and throw. Being a big sports fan that I am, I instantly fell in love with the idea of just messing around and playing lacrosse. I plan on buying a cheap lacrosse stick and playing with my resident who has his. I’m probably never going to play in a lacrosse league but I always like to be a part of any type of sport. Lacrosse also helps with hand/eye coordination and is a good workout if a person runs around.
